This weekend began quietly enough...my youngest son’s 16th birthday....last minute planning details for a day of fishing in the inlet to celebrate the occasion with his friend Evan...additional planning for a ‘BBQ’ on ‘Picnic Island’...frantic packing of supplies for the day and the birthday event was on...Haida Gwaii style that is!

The ‘boys’ left the harbour in the skiff by late morning (skiff’s are often the first ‘vehicle’ driven by young men on Haida Gwaii!) and returned much later refreshed and ready for yet more food - a favourite supper and of course, cake.

The weather forecast for the weekend promised clear skies, sun and warm weather. A visit to the beach was in definitely in order for Mother’s Day.

It is amazing how relaxing a walk on the beach can be! The many Haida Gwaii beaches differ greatly and can provide hours of tranquil beachcombing time.

This Sunday's beach walk was during a very low tide which left much of the intertidal life exposed for us to admire.

Sand cushions the weary step while the tide seemingly takes with it, one’s worries and cares. In the past, a trip to the ocean-side was thought of as the equivalent of medicine for the soul – I think I can understand why.

Come walk the many miles of beaches on Haida Gwaii! It is truely good for the soul.
